Using Linux and 'dd' avoids the need to search for an old Windows 98 or DOS bootdisk assuming s/he even has one. (No more turning off Norton when I want to copy my program.) Zeroing the boot sector has always solved Microsoft's formatting problems for me and should for you too given the hard disk is not bad. (The program actually is detected by Norton Anti-virus as the ZeroBoot worm!) However, after I started using Linux, I discovered a standard Linux program called 'dd' which essentially does the same thing. To get around this problem, I used to use a small Assembler program I wrote to call INT 13h and write zeros to the boot sector. However, there is an error in Microsoft's boot sector code, where if you boot sector is arranged in a certain pattern, nether DOS's FDISK nor XP's install can get far enough to partition the disk property.
Microsoft formatting utilities interpret the boot sector before writing to it (as do most other programs). After this the installation of Windows XP went smoothly. Does anyone know where I could find such a tool or another solution for this problem?įixed the problem, created a start-up disk using my old Windows 98 computer and then ran fdisk from there and removed my old C partition. Problem is that I don't know of any such tools. I guess one possible solution could be to format my computer using an external tool that could be used at start-up.
Anyways the error message is the following: There comes this blue screen telling you about checking if this error happens every time and also to try removing recently installed hardware. Well after accepting that EULA or something and the installer starts doing something and strange error comes up (every time).
I thought okay, I'll just put my Windows XP CD into the CD drive and reinstall windows. First off, when I try to start windows it tells me that a file is corrupt or missing at "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM".
